My Review

Walt Disney Pictures is continuing the practice of making live-action adaptations of their own classic animated films, this time with “Mulan.” The redux of the popular 1998 movie of the same name has fantastic results: Great performances, lots of action, beautiful costumes, stunning scenery (China and New Zealand), and a marvelous story based on ancient Chinese folklore.

Director Niki Caro (“Whale Rider” 2002) struck the perfect balance throughout, remaining faithful to the original and keeping this project flowing at an even pace. The screenplay was written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin.

The talented Chinese-American actress, Yifei Liu, was perfect in the title role. Liu seemed to do as well in action sequences as she did in subtle close-up performances. The supporting cast includes Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Gong Li, Jimmy Wong, Jason Scott Lee, Tzi Ma and Rosalind Chao appearing as Mulan’s parents, and Jet Li as the Emperor of China.

“Mulan” is a very watchable action film from Walt Disney Pictures, a fun view on dvd for the entire family.
