My Review

“Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is a classic rags-to-riches story where a cleaning lady in London becomes obsessed with a client’s fancy Dior dress. She travels to Paris to obtain said frock, and sparks soon fly in her dealings with upper-class employees at the Dior headquarters.

If this tale sounds familiar, it is because it was adapted from a popular 1958 novel of the same name by Paul Gallico, and had several movie and television adaptations, including a 1992 tv movie starring Angela Lansbury, Diana Rigg, and Omar Shariff.

This version directed by Anthony Fabian (“Skin” 2008) took care to create a movie with good production values. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Carroll Cartwright, Keith Thompson, and Olivia Hetreed.

The cast was headed by Lesley Manville, who was seemingly sent over by central casting for the title role. Others include Isabelle Huppert, Lambert Wilson, Alba Baptista, Lucas Bravo, Ellen Thomas, Rose Williams, and Jason Isaacs. All part of the independently produced “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” a modest hit at the box office.
