My Review

“Mr. Malcolm’s List” is a period romantic drama set in England in the early 1800’s. It tells the story of a young woman who begins courting a suitor unaware that he has a stringent list of qualifications for a future wife. Director Emma Holly Jones and screenwriter Suzanne Allain have created an easy to follow storyline that mainly appeals to a narrow audience of females from teen years to about age 30, presumably fans of Jane Austin novels.

The screenplay was adapted by Allain from her own 2009 novel of the same name. The ethnically diverse cast, something one would not expect from a film set in early 19th century England, includes such talented actors Freida Pinto, Sope Dirisu, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ashley Park, Zawe Ashton, Theo James, Divian Ladwa, Maoko Mori, Sophie Vavesseur. The watchable independently produced “Mr. Malcolm’s List” was mainly released in art house cinemas, so did not make much money to get on the blockbuster movie list.
