My Review

Weak comedy, poor acting, and predictable plot lines all characterize “Mr. Deeds,” an Adam Sandler film vehicle. Director Steven Brill (“Little Nicky” 2000) and screenwriter Tim Herlihy turned out a poor remake of the 1936 Frank Capra classic movie “Mr. Deeds Goes to Washington.” Sandler plays a pizzeria owner in New Hampshire who unexpectedly inherits big money from his great-uncle and must travel to New York City to claim the estate.

There are so few genuine laughs in this “comedy” that the cast looks strained in their performances. Co-stars behind Sandler include Winona Ryder, John Turturro, Peter Gallagher, Conchata Ferrell, Harve Presnell, Steve Buscemi, Allen Covert, Jared Harris, Erick Avari, Peter Dante, J. B. Smoove, and George Wallace. Rob Schneider, Al Sharpton, and John McEnroe make cameo appearances.

The film was nominated for two Golden Raspberry Awards (“The Razzies”): Worst Actor for Adam Sandler and Worst Actress for Winona Ryder. Despite this, it was a success at the box office for Out of the Blue Entertainment, Happy Madison Productions, New Line Cinema, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing. Do yourself a good deed and avoid screening “Mr. Deeds.”
