My Review

“Moonstruck” is a romantic comedy film featuring Cher as a widow who falls in love with her fiance’s estranged brother, bringing all kinds of havoc to the families and circle of friends involved. Director Norman Jewison (“Fiddler on the Roof” 1971) put together a hilarious ethnic comedy centered around Italian-Americans of New York City. The marvelous script was penned by John Patrick Shanley.

The two main actors, Cher and Nicholas Cage, delivered energetic performances that carried the film, no doubt one of the best of each actors’ career. Co-stars include Olympia Dukakis, Vincent Gardenia, Danny Aiello, John Mahoney, Julie Bovasso, Louis Guss, Feodor Chaliapin, Leonardo Cimino, Paula Truman, and Anita Gillette in her feature film debut.

The watchable “Moonstruck” was a big hit at the box office for producer Norman Jewison, Star Partners II Ltd., and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. “Moonstruck” was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning three for Best Actress (Cher), Best Supporting Actress (Dukakis), and Best Original Screenplay. The three non-winners were Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor (Gardenia).
