My Review

Pixar continues to innovate in the field of computer generated animation with “Monsters, Inc.” The very original story by Peter Docter centers on two monsters employed at Monsters, Inc., who rebel against the company’s policy of making money off of scaring children around the world to generate energy. Docter did a superb job of managing the film in his directorial debut, from the marvelous screenplay by Andrew Stanton and Daniel Gerson.

The voice actors include John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Mary Gibbs, Steve Buscemi, James Coburn, Jennifer Tilly, John Ratzenberger, Bob Peterson, Frank Oz, Bonnie Hunt, Steve Susskind, Daniel Gerson, and Jeff Pidgeon.

The film was nominated for four Oscars, winning one for Randy Newman for the Best Original Song, “If I Didn’t Have You”, performed by Goodman and Crystal. (Newman also won the Grammy Award for Best Song.) The three other Academy Award nominations were for Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing. “Monsters, Inc.” was a huge success in theatrical release for Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Pictures, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company.
