My Review

“Modern Problems” is a comedy film telling the story of a man who gets into a car crash with a truck containing nuclear waste, which spills on his car and on his person. The next day he notices he has supernatural powers and the limited comedy proceeds from there. One would think this sort of premise would offer all kinds of comedic situations, but bad directing and writing by Ken Shapiro offers the audience nothing but radioactive entertainment.

The star of the film is Chevy Chase, who has terrible material to work with. He never had a chance to succeed with his famous comic skills. Co-stars include Patti D’Arbanville, Dabney Coleman, Mary Kay Place, and Nell Carter, who do little to help out with 20th Century Fox’s problematic project, which had some modest success in theatrical release. “Modern Problems” has too many problems.
