Tom Cruise returns for the second time as Ethan Hunt in “Mission: Impossible II,” where he and his IMF team accept a mission to capture a virus from Germany before terrorists release it on the public. The situation is complicated when they discover that bad actors are also after the virus, and, in fact, have the cure.
The engrossing drama proceeds from there, thanks to great direction by John Woo and a well written screenplay by Robert Towne. Much of the story takes place in Australia, bit the film starts out on a rock climbing holiday for Hunt in Utah. That amazing scene is just a taste of the outstanding action sequences throughout the film.
The supporting cast behind Cruise includes Thandiwe Newton, Ving Rhames, Dougray Scott, Richard Roxburgh, John Polson, Brendon Gleeson, Rade Serbedzija, Dominic Purcell, and William Mopather, Cruise’s cousin. Anthony Hopkins appears in an uncredited cameo role as the mission commander. The very entertaining and watchable “Mission: Impossible II” was the highest grossing film of 2000 for producers Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner, Cruise/Wagner Productions, and Paramount Pictures.
“Mission: Impossible II” won two Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Remake or Sequel and Worst Supporting Actress for Newton. Some of the critics did not like the lack of “character development” over the emphasis on action sequences. Apparently the general public does not agree.
