My Review

“Mission: Impossible” is a remake of the television series that aired on CBS from 1966 to 1973. The story has Jim Phelps and his IMF team on a mission in Prague, where they are all killed with Ethan Hunt being the only survivor. Director Brian De Palma (“Carlito’s Way” 1993) brought good production values to the film, including exciting action sequences, a fast-moving story, and good performances from the actors. All of these positive factors helped to disguise the convoluted storyline, from the mediocre screenplay by David Koepp and Robert Towne.

Tom Cruise delivered as the lead part of Ethan Hunt; his energetic talents carried this film into its numerous sequels. Co-stars include Jon Voight (as Jim Phelps), Ving Rhames, Jean Reno, Vanessa Redgrave, Kristen Scott Thomas, Henry Czerny, Emmanuelle Beart, Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Rolf Saxon, Marcel Iures, and Emilio Estevez in an uncredited role at the beginning of the picture.

“Mission: Impossible” was a huge blockbuster in theatrical release, the third highest grossing picture of 1996, for producers Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner, Cruise/Wagner Productions, and Paramount Pictures. It has become one of the major film franchises with sequels coming out in 2000, 2006, 2011, 2015, 2018, 2023, and one set for release in 2025.
