My Review

Producer-director-writer Todd Haynes (“Far From Heaven” 2002) and the HBO cable channel teamed up to put together the definitive version of James M. Cain’s 1941 novel “Mildred Pierce.” The quality of the five hour miniseries surpassed that of the 1945 movie, which was pretty much a vehicle for Joan Crawford.

The miniseries received a whopping 21 Emmy nominations and 5 winners, reflecting the show’s high production values. Winners include Art Direction, Casting, Music Score, Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce), and Kate Winslet as Outstanding Lead Actress for the title role. Her nuanced performance was arguably the best of Winslet’s career, as the hard working restaurant owner in 1930’s Depression Era Los Angeles, trying to balance her professional life with family problems.

Other actors include Evan Rachel Wood, Guy Pearce, Melissa Leo, Hope Davis, Mare Winningham, Miriam Shor, Morgan Turner, James LeGros, Brian F. O’Byrne, Quinn McColgan.

The very watchable five-episode “Mildred Pierce” was originally broadcast in March and April of 2011 on HBO.
