“Meet the Parents” is a romantic comedy film from director Jay Roach (“Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” 1997). It is the story of a young man meeting his girl friend’s parents for the first time, with her father, a former CIA operative and military veteran, disliking him immediately because of his employment as a male nurse. The culture clash comedy proceeds from there!
Director Roach kept the filming moving at an even pace, with a good screenplay by Jim Herzfeld and John Hamburg. There is good chemistry between the stars, Ben Stiller as the boyfriend, Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner as the parents, Teri Polo as the daughter, as well as James Rebhorn, Jon Abrahams, Owen Wilson, Nicole DeHuff, Thomas McCarthy, and Phyliss George, well known as Miss America 1971.
“Meet the Parents” was quite the success at the box office for TriBeCa Productions, Nancy Tenenbaum Productions, and Universal Pictures. It inspired two sequels: “Meet the Fockers” (2004) and “Little Fockers” (2010).
