My Review

“Meet John Doe” is a classic Frank Capra yarn about a newspaper reporter who unwittingly sparks a major grassroots political movement when she publishes a fake letter to the editor under the name John Doe. She hires an unemployed baseball player to play her John Doe, and the mayhem proceeds from there.

Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper deliver exemplary performances under the tutelage of director Frank Capra (“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” 1939). Co-stars include Edward Arnold, Walter Brennan, Spring Byington, James Gleason, Gene Lockhart, Regis Toomey, and Sterling Holloway. Cooper previously worked with Capra on “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town” in 1936.

The fast-paced screenplay was written by Robert Riskin, from a story by Richard Connell and Robert Presnell. The pair received Oscar nods for Best Original Story. The very watchable movie classic “Meet John Doe” was popular at the box office for producer Frank Capra, Frank Capra Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
