My Review

“Me and Orson Welles” is the fictional story of a young actor hired by Welles to work in his stage adaptation of Bill Shakespeare’s “Julius Ceasar,” and quickly gets involved in a love triangle with Welles and a beautiful female production assistant. Director Richard Linklater (“Bad News Bears” 2005) got outstanding performances out of the actors, but failed to create an interesting or watchable motion picture.

“Me and Orson Welles” is mostly a dull affair, from a sluggish screenplay by Holly Gent and Vincent Palmo Jr., adapted from Robert Kaplow’s 2003 novel of the same name. Kudos to the actors, especially to Christain McKay playing Orson Welles. McKay could have been “channeling” Welles for all we know! Others include Zach Efron and Claire Danes in the other two top roles, as well as Eddie Marsan as John Houseman, James Tupper as Joseph Cotten, Ben Chaplin, Leo Bill, Kelly Reilly, Patrick Kennedy, Travis Oliver, and Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of Elia Kazan.

“Me and Orson Welles” is an independent production that was a big flop at the box office, not even well attended at the art house cinemas.
