John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara star in the lively and boisterous western “McLintock!” Director Andrew V. McLaglen (“The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come” 1961) began a successful collaboration with the Duke, this being the first of five films he directed for John. Son Michael Wayne was the producer, and another son and daughter, Patrick Wayne and Alissa Wayne, were in the cast.
Wayne and O’Hara play a couple with problems, based on Bill Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” They have great on-screen chemistry; this is the third of five films they appeared in together. Co-stars include Stefanie Powers, Yvonne De Carlo, Chill Wills, Jerry Van Dyke, Edgar Buchanan, Strother Martin, Michael Pate, Bruce Cabot, Patrick Wayne, H. W. Gim, Perry Lopez, Jack Kruschen, Alissa Wayne, Gordon Jones, Mari Blanchard, and “Big” John Hamilton as Fauntleroy Sage.
The very entertaining and watchable “McLintock!” was a huge box office hit for producer Patrick Wayne, Batjack Productions, and United Artists.
