My Review

Historical inaccuracies and gratuitous sex scenes plague the latest “Mary Queen of Scots” motion picture. This was Josie Rourke’s first movie direction job, and her inexperience shows. (She was mainly a director in live theater.) The picture is also just plain boring, with a lackluster screenplay by Beau Willimon.

The performances by the leading actresses are mixed, with Australian Margot Robbie shining as Queen Elizabeth I, and Saoirse Ronan from Ireland crashing and burning in the title role. Ronan should go back to basic acting classes, if she ever attended any. Other cast members include Guy Pearce, Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, Gemma Chan, and David Tennant in a stand out performance as John Knox, the Protestant reformer who opposed Mary and later founded the Presbyterian Church. Tennant is well known as the tenth doctor in the popular “Doctor Who” series.

“Mary Queen of Scots” is an independent film from the British production company Working Title Films. It was denied the crown in theaters, as movie audiences stayed away from this royal bomb in droves.
