There is no shortage of drama in “Mary, Queen of Scots,” the lavish Hal B. Wallis production of the historical conflict between Protestant Queen Elizabeth I of England and Catholic Queen Mary of Scotland. Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson are perfectly cast as the two monarchs, superbly directed by Charles Jarrott (“Anne of the Thousand Days” 1969). John Hale penned an outstanding script.
The supporting cast includes Patrick McGoohan, Timothy Dalton, Nigel Davenport, Trevor Howard, Daniel Massey, Ian Holm, Richard Denning, and Robert James as the Scottish Protestant reformer John Knox. “Mary, Queen of Scots” was successful at the box office for producer Hal B. Wallis and Universal Pictures. The two-hour-plus movie was nominated for five Oscars, including one for Redgrave.
