My Review

The Best Picture of 1955 is…..”Marty.” This is the story of a socially awkward thirty-something man who finds a girl friend he really likes but gets the thumbs down from his family and friends. Marty must decide between their approval or a shot at romance. First time director Delbert Mann put together a fine drama with good character development from a superior screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky.

Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair deliver strong performances in this tasteful romantic drama. Co-stars include Esther Minciotti, Augusta Ciolli, Joe Mantell, Karen Steele, Jerry Paris, and Frank Sutton in an uncredited small part. Sutton would later go on to fame as Sgt. Carter on the CBS sitcom “Gomer Pyle USMC” (1964-1969).

The very watchable “Marty” popular at the box office for producer Harold Hecht, Steven Productions, Hecht-Lancaster Productions, and United Artists. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning four: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Borgnine), and Best Screenplay. Non-winners include Best Supporting Actor (Mantell), Best Supporting Actress (Blair), Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography/Black-and-White (Joseph LaShelle).
