My Review

“Marnie” is unusual for an Alfred Hitchcock movie in that it deals with some very dark themes, such as rape, mental illness, and blackmail. By themselves, these topics don’t have much of a story for cinema, but they do here as they involve the main characters played by Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery.

Hitch hired Jay Presson Allen to write the screenplay, adapted from the 1961 novel of the same name by Winston Graham. The script is a bit uneven, but somehow Hedren and Connery pulled things off fairly well under Hitch’s tutelage. Co-stars include Diane Baker, Martin Gabel, Louise Latham, Mariette Hartley, Alan Napier, Bruce Dern, Bob Sweeney, Milton Selzer, Henry Beckman, S. John Launer, Edith Evanson, and Meg Wyllie.

“Marnie” was not one of Hitch’s best films but does make for interesting viewing nonetheless. It was moderately successful in theatrical release for producer Alfred Hitchcock, Geoffrey Stanley Productions, and Universal Pictures.
