My Review

“Marie Galante” is the dramatic story of a French woman kidnapped and taken on an American cargo ship bound for the Panama Canal. She escapes in Central America and is helped out by an American doctor. Director Henry King (“State Fair” 1933) crafted an absorbing drama, despite an uneven storyline in the middle of the picture, from the screenplay by Reginald Berkeley.

Spencer Tracy is the star of the show as Dr. Crawbett, a tropical disease specialist. He is always an outstanding performer. His co-star is French actress Ketti Gallian in the title role. The supporting cast includes Ned Sparks, Helen Morgan, Sig Ruman, Leslie Fenton, Arthur Byron, Robert Loraine, Frank Darien, Stepin Fetchit, and Jay C. Flippen in an uncredited part as a sailor in a bar. This was one of Flippen’s first movie roles in a career that would continue until 1971.

The watchable “Marie Galante” was popular in theatrical release for Fox Film Corporation, which in 1935 would merge with 20th Century Pictures to form 20th Century Fox Studios.
