My Review

“Margin Call” is a riveting drama taking place behind the scenes of a fictional Wall Street investment bank during the initial stages of the 2008 financial crisis. Similar to real-life companies, this firm found itself massively over-leveraged in mortgaged-backed securities. “Margin Call” depicts the “dumping” of the bad loans, which sacrificed the company’s credibility and reputation and endangered its survival.

Tight direction by J. C. Chandor, in his feature-length film debut, kept the audience’s attention from start to finish. He also wrote the marvelous screenplay, which received the film’s sole Academy Award nomination. The ensemble cast includes Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Stanley Tucci, Demi Moore, Mary McDonnell, Simon Baker, Penn Badgley, Aasif Mandvi, Ashley Williams, Susan Blackwell, and Al Sapienza.

“Margin Call” was only modestly successful in theatrical release for Myriad Pictures, Benaroya Pictures, and Before the Door Pictures.
