Casey Affleck won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a troubled man who gains custody of his teenage nephew after the death of his brother in “Manchester by the Sea.” The peeling away of layers to reveal the background of the main character was superbly handled by Affleck, under the expert guidance of director-screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan (“Margaret” 2011), who himself won an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
The talented supporting cast includes Michelle Williams as the ex-wife and Lucas Hedges as the nephew. Both were nominated for Oscars. (Two other nominations were for Best Picture and Best Director.) Other actors include Kyle Chandler, Gretchen Mol, C. J. Wilson, Tate Donovan, Josh Hamilton, and Matthew Broderick. Matt Damon was one of the producers of this watchable indy film, “Manchester by the Sea,” a success at the box office.
