My Review

“Man in the Shadow” is a modern-day western crime drama where a big rancher covers up a murder on his property, aided by townsfolk who feel their community would be harmed by a loss of the ranch’s business. Director Jack Arnold (“It Came from Outer Space” 1953) put together quit a humdinger of a movie, with a well written screenplay by Gene L. Coon (future major teleplay writer and general contributor for the original “Star Trek” television series).

The outstanding cast is headed by Jeff Chandler, delivering quite a performance as the town’s sheriff, and Orson Welles, lending his larger-than-life persona as the owner of the Golden Empire Ranch. Co-stars include Colleen Miller, Ben Alexander, Barbara Lawrence, John Larch, James Gleason, Royal Dano, William Schallert, Paul Fix, Charles Horvath, Martin Garralaga, Mario Siletti, Leo Gordon, Forrest Lewis, Harry Harvey Sr., and Mort Mills as the Empire Rach gateman.

This watchable black-and-white film “Man in the Shadow” was popular in theatrical release for Universal Pictures.
