Charlton Heston turns in a multi-faceted performance a U. S. Army major in the Civil War who leads a band of Union soldiers, Confederate prisoners, Indian scouts, and mercenaries into Mexico to pursue some Apache Indians who have been raiding American bases and settlements. Director Sam Peckinpah (“Ride the High Country” 1962) turned Harry Julian Fink’s screenplay into an exciting motion picture, albeit with some inconsistencies in the plot.
Chuck Heston’s diverse group of co-stars includes Richard Harris, Senta Berger, Jim Hutton, James Coburn, Ben Johnson, Warren Oates, Slim Pickens, Dub Taylor, Michael Pate, Michael Anderson Jr., Mario Adorf, Brock Peters, R. G. Armstrong, L. Q. Jones, Jose Carlos Ruiz, Albert Carrier, Aurora Clavel, Begona Palacios, John Davis Chandler, and Karl Swenson. “Major Dundee” was actually filmed in Mexico, lending authenticity to the project, which was not terribly successful at the box office for Jerry Bresler Productions and Columbia Pictures.
