“Mafia Doctor” is a superior mob picture, starring Danny Nucci as a doctor whose education was paid for by a Mafia don, played by Paul Sorvino. In exchange, he is expected to take care of the medical needs of the mobsters. Nucci’s character has a crisis of conscience along the way, with the drama proceeding from there.
The teleplay by John Leekey, Rebekah Bradford, and Ray Errol Fox has few inconsistencies, moves along at a good pace, and has a fresh feel to it, which is amazing as the organized crime theme has been used numerous times in motion pictures and television shows. Director Alex Chapple kept tight control on the entire process.
Nucci and Sorvino deliver earnest and convincing performances. Co-stars Jonathan Scarfe, Olympia Dukakis, Joanne Kelly, Philip Akin, Corey James, and Beau Starr also made indispensable contributions to the very watchable CBS made-for-television movie “Mafia Doctor.”
