It earned him an Oscar nomination, one of four for the film, with only Anthony Quinn winning Best Supporting Actor as fellow painter Paul Gaugain.
Director Vincent Minnelli (“Meet Me in St. Louis” 1944) put together a film that is a bit dry and dull and tedious, especially at a 122 minute running time. However, much interesting drama remains in the film from the screenplay by Norman Corwin, based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Irving Stone. Oscar nods also went for Best Screenplay and Best Art Direction.
Co-stars include Pamela Brown, James Donald, Everett Sloane, Henry Daniell, Madge Kennedy, Noel Purcell, Laurence Naismith, and Jill Bennett as Willemien. The snoozer and artsy drama “Lust for Life” was a flop at the box office for producer John Houseman and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
