Elvis Presley made his motion picture debut in “Love Me Tender,” a western soap opera about four brothers in the Civil War. There were several musical numbers featured in the film, including the title song, which was an Elvis hit on the charts at the time. This is a pattern followed throughout Presley’s career under the guidance of his manager Col. Tom Parker.
Though the movie seemed to be crafted for Elvis, he actually received third billing after Richard Egan and Debra Paget. This was the first and only time that would occur. Presley’s acting talent was quite good, and he held his own with the more experienced Paget and Egan.
Co-stars include Mildred Dunnock, James Drury, William Campbell, Neville Brand, Russ Conway, L. Q. Jones, Robert Middleton, Bruce Bennett, Ken Clark, Barry Coe, Paul E. Burns, and Dick Sargent. Director Robert D. Webb (“Beneath the 12-Mile Reef” 1953) and screenwriters Robert Buckner and Maurice Geraghty did a good job of creating a watchable and entertaining film “Love Me Tender,” a huge box office hit for 20th Century Fox.
