My Review

Director Bill Pohlad (“Into the Wild” 2007) gives us an unconventional view of musician Brian Wilson’s struggle with depression and mental illness in “Love and Mercy.” Pohlad and screenwriters Oren Moverman and Michael Alan Lerner have two stories going on at the same time. Actor Paul Dano portrays a young Wilson in the 1960’s, while John Cusack plays him in the 1980’s.

The actors did their jobs well enough, but the material was not always focused and organized. Pohlad and the writers seemed to flounder a bit, admittedly with difficult subject matter. Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti also star in this independent film “Love and Mercy,” a glimpse into the life of the legendary musician Brian Wilson, who was the driving force behind the immensely popular Beach Boys.
