“Life” is a science fiction story about scientists aboard the International Space Station who discover life in soil samples from Mars. They get more than they bargained for when they discover that it is evolving more rapidly than anticipated. Director Daniel Espinosa (“Safe House” 2012) kept a tight reign on the production, ensuring the story is believable and the action well paced in this sci-fi adventure.
The well written screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick is good material for the ensemble cast to work with. The actors include Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, Anyon Bakare, and Olga Dihovichnaya. Though one cannot help make comparisons between “Life” and “Alien” (1979), “Life” can stand alone as watchable entertainment and was a modest hit in theatrical release for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures.
