My Review

Kevin Costner and Diane Lane star in a riveting drama about a Montana couple who embark on a journey to find their grandchild after the death of their only son. Director-screenwriter Thomas Bezucha (“The Family Stone” 2005) keeps the suspense going for nearly two hours; he adapted the film from the 2013 novel of the same name by Larry Watson.

Costner fits perfectly into this neo-Western role, a retired sheriff who goes on what turns out to be a rescue attempt of his grandson. The talented Diane Lane has another good role as his wife. British actress Lesley Manville is outstanding as Blanche Webey, the Ma Barker-type that is head of the family that Costner and Lane’s daughter-in-law marries into. Her performance as the hillbilly family matriarch is downright chilling.

The cast also includes Will Brittain, Jeffrey Donovan, Kayli Carter, Booboo Stewart, Bradley Stryker as Sheriff Nevelson, and young Ryan Bruce as the grandson. “Let Him Go” is not a great name for a Western thriller, but is a very watchable motion picture from Universal Pictures.
