French director Luc Besson (“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” 2017) put out an action picture called “Leon: The Professional.” It is the story of a professional hitman who reluctantly takes a twelve-year-old girl under his wing when her family is murdered.
Besson, who also penned the screenplay, gave us a film that we have a feeling we have seen before. It is watchable with fair production values, but not too much to sink our teeth into. The performances are at least acceptable, with veteran French actor Jean Reno as the hitman and Israeli actor Natalie Portman making her big screen debut as the orphaned young woman. Not bad for her first professional film appearance. The Force must be with her.
The supporting cast includes Gary Oldman, Danny Aiello, Michael Badalucco, Ellen Greene, Adam Busch, Joseph Malerba, George Martin, and Maiwenn as The Blonde Babe. The barely watchable “Leon: The Professional” was successful in theatrical release for Gaumont Film Company, Les Films du Dauphin, Gaumont Buena Vista International, and The Walt Disney Company.
