“Lawless” is a crime drama story about three brothers running a moonshine business in 1931 rural Virginia and the scrapes they get into with local law enforcement, federal authorities, and other criminal elements. Director John Hillcoat (“The Road” 2009) and screenwriter Nick Cave let the violence get out of hand but do have an interesting story to tell with good performances by the actors.
The talented ensemble cast includes Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Dane DeHaan, Chris McGarry, Mia Wasikowska, Lew Temple, Bill Camp, and Noah Taylor. “Lawless” was not terribly successful in theatrical release for Red Wagon Entertainment, FilmNation Entertainment, and the other independent production companies involved. It was adapted from the 2008 novel “The Wealthiest County in the World” by Matt Bonderant.
