My Review

“Lars and the Real Girl” is an off-beat comedy-drama about a socially awkward young man who develops a romantic and non-sexual relationship with an anatomically correct sex doll. His family and friends support him while he words through his problem of fear of intimacy.

Director Craig Gillespie (“Mr. Woodcock” 2007) and screenwriter Nancy Oliver avoid cheap jokes and keep the film on the high road. Gillespie is steady at the helm, delivering a tasteful motion picture that is also well paced throughout the 106 minutes.

Ryan Gosling gives a sensitive early career performance. Considering the variety of roles he has done since 1997, it is obvious he has quite an acting range. The supporting cast includes Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, R. D. Reid, Kelli Garner, Nancy Beatty, Doug Lennox, and Patricia Clarkson.

“Lars and the Real Girl” was nominated for one Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The film did not make much cash at the box office for Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
