My Review

Director Gordon Douglas (“Follow That Dream” 1962) and star Frank Sinatra had such a smashing success with “Tony Rome” in 1967 that 20th Century Fox green-lighted a sequel called “Lady in Cement,” released in 1968. It did not have the quality of the original but was quite entertaining nonetheless.

The movie relies heavily upon the persona of Frank Sinatra, with screenwriters Jack Guss and Marvin Albert providing a convoluted storyline and less punchy one-liners than the Chairman of the Board had in “Tony Rome.” The supporting cast is quite good with a young Raquel Welch gracing the big screen with her presence, returnee Richard Conte as the police lieutenant, big Dan Blocker of “Bonanza” fame, Richard Deacon (in a different kind of role than he had in “Leave It to Beaver” or “The Dick Van Dyke Show”), Martin Gabel, Pat Henry, and Lainie Kazan in her motion picture debut. Christine Todd made her only film appearance as Sandra Lomax, the “Lady in Cement.”
