My Review

Ronald Reagan delivered one of his most critically acclaimed performances in “King’s Row.” The story of a young man who has his legs amputated is actually one of several subplots in this complex, and somewhat dark, motion picture. It was unusual for the World War II years, as studios tended to put out positive and uplifting films to boost the public’s morale.

Director Sam Wood (“A Night at the Opera” 1935) ensured good production values, especially the cinematography by James Wong Howe, which was one of three Oscar nominations for “King’s Row.” The others were Best Picture and Best Director. The screenplay was written by Casey Robinson, adapted from the 1940 novel by Henry Bellamann.

Robinson provided some outstanding dialogue for stars Ronald Reagan, Ann Sheridan, Robert Cummings, Betty Field, Charles Coburn, Claude Rains, Judith Anderson, Nancy Coleman, Ann Todd, Maria Ouspenskaya, Harry Davenport. The watchable drama “King’s Row” was a big hit at the box office for producer Hal B. Wallis and Warner Bros. Pictures.
