My Review

“King of California” is a quirky comedy-drama film from Mike Cahill, making his debut as director and screenwriter. This is Cahill’s original story about a mentally ill man who believes there is buried treasure beneath the Costco where his daughter works. She is reluctantly drawn into his scheme to recover the gold he believes was buried there by early Spanish explorers.

The film is quite a good first time effort by Cahill. The story moves along quickly enough despite some inconsistencies in the plot. Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood deliver winsome performances, with a supporting cast that includes Allyson Ashley Arm, Willis Burks II, Laura Kachergus, Paul Lieber, Kathleen Wilhoite, Greg Davis Jr., Angel Oquendo, Ashley Greene, Will Rothhaar, and Jason Auer.

“King of California” was an independently produced film that flopped at the box office, but is a watchable movie on DVD.
