My Review

“King David” is a drama film about the life of David, the second king of ancient Israel. Richard Gere delivered an acceptable performance, depicting the highlights of his life, first as a young man anointed by the prophet Samuel to the slaying of Goliath to years running from King Saul to his own reign to the end of his life, when he installed Solomon as is successor. Director Bruce Beresford (“Driving Miss Daisy” 1989) put together an average but not outstanding film. He at least did not stray in any major way from the accounts of David’s life as recorded in Hebrew scriptures. The screenplay was written by Andrew Birkin and James Costigan.

The cast includes Richard Gere as David, Edward Woodward as Saul, Alice Krige as Bathsheba, Denis Quilley as Samuel, Niall Buggy as Nathan, Cherie Lunghi as Michal, Jack Klaff as Jonathan, John Castle as Abner, Tim Woodward as Joab, Hurd Hatfield as Ahimelech, Jean-Marc Barr as Absalom, and George Eastman as Goliath. Alice Krige would later become famous as the Borg Queen in “Star Trek” movies and television shows (1996-2023). “King David” was a flop at the box office for Paramount Pictures. Richard Gere was nominated for Worst Actor at that year’s Golden Raspberry Awards.
