My Review

“Killing Reagan” is an outstanding made-for-television drama film about the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981, and the effect on his life and on his presidency. Stars Tim Matheson and Cynthia Nixon do an excellent job of capturing the essence of Ronald and Nancy Reagan’s personalities. It also vividly portrays how the First Lady turned to astrology for help and how the President realized that God had granted him more time to do His will.

Director Rod Lurie (“Nothing But The Truth” 2008) and teleplay author Eric Simonson were meticulous in their efforts to keep the project factual and accurate. It was based on the 2015 book of the same name by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard.

The supporting cast also deserve honorable mention for their performances as they appear as people the public is already familiar with. They include Jeff Harlan as Michael Deaver, Joel Murray as Edwin Meese, Kyle S. More as John Hinkley, Geoff Pierson as James Baker, Michael H. Cole as James Brady, Patrick St. Espirit as Alexander Haig, and John L. Smith as President Jimmy Carter.

The very watchable and informative made-for-tv movie “Killing Reagan” was first broadcast on the National Geographic Channel in October, 2016.
