My Review

“Killing Lincoln” is an astoundingly informative made-for-television movie about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The teleplay by Erik Jendresen is a faithful adaptation of the 2011 book by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. It takes a look at the largely unknown details immediately preceding and following one of the most well-known events in American history.

Director Adrian Moat and his staff maintained good production values for the picture. Moat was also successful at keeping the film on an even keel and at helping the actors focus on their roles. The three principals did exceptional jobs at bringing their famous characters to life: Billy Campbell as Abraham Lincoln, Jesse Johnson as John Wilkes Booth, and Geraldine Hughes as Mary Todd Lincoln.

The supporting cast includes Brett Dalton, Graham Beckel, Kam Dabrowski, Eleanor Parkinson, Todd Fletcher, and many others. Tom Hanks serves as the narrator; he is a third cousin, four times removed, of Mr. Lincoln through the President’s mother’s side of the family, Nancy Hanks Lincoln.

Filmmakers Ridley Scott and Tony Scott were producers of “Killing Lincoln” along with O’Reilly and Jendresen. Tony Scott committed suicide about one month into production, and the film is dedicated to his memory. “Killing Lincoln” first aired in February, 2013, on the National Geographic Channel.
