My Review

Director Martin Scorsese (“The King of Comedy” 1982) has put together an epic crime drama set in the 1920’s about a series of murders on the Osage Nation Indian reservation after the discovery of oil in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Scorsese has incorporated very high production values throughout the three-and-a-half hour film, including good writing, outstanding performances, authentic sets and costumes, a marvelous musical score, just to name a few.

He co-wrote the screenplay with Eric Roth, adapted from the 2017 nonfiction book of the same name by David Grann. The cast is headed by Leonardo DiCaprio, whose character’s uncle, played by Robert De Niro, gets him involved in heinous schemes against the Native peoples, which includes marrying one of them. His wife is played by Lily Gladstone. These three principals deliver amazing performances with unbelievable chemistry, in a movie with otherworldly atmospherics.

The supporting cast includes Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Louis Cancelmi, Scott Shepherd, Tatanka Means, Gary Basaraba, Pat Healy, Steve Witting, and Barry Corbin, well-known as Sheriff Fenton Washburn in the first five seasons of CBS’s “Dallas” (1979-1984), as the undertaker. Martin Scorsese fills in a cameo role as a radio show producer.

Special salutes should go to Rodrigo Prieto for the cinematography, Thelma Schoonmaker for the editing, and Robbie Robertson for the marvelous musical score. This was the eleventh and final movie collaboration between Scorsese and Robertson, who passed away two months before the film’s release; the movie is dedicated to Robertson.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” is doing quite well at the box office for producer Martin Scorsese, Apple Studios, Imperative Entertainment, Sikelia Productions, Appian Way Productions, Apple Original Films, and Paramount Pictures.
