My Review

“Julie & Julia” is artsy filmmaking at its best. Producer-director-screenwriter Nora Ephron put together this project that is two movies in one. The story of the famed Julia Child early in her career is told concurrently with the story of a young writer named Julie Powell, who tries to cook all 524 recipes in Child’s cookbook in one calendar year, as chronicled in her blog.

Meryl Streep and Amy Adams are fantastic as Child and Powell, respectively. Each dominates her section of the movie, with Streep earning yet another of her zillion Oscar nominations. Also appearing are Stanley Tucci, Chris Messina, Linda Emond, Jane Lynch. Mary Lynn Rajskub, Frances Sternhagen, and Mary Kay Place as the voice of Julie’s mother.

This was Ephron’s last film before her passing in 2012. Her career began in 1983 when she co-wrote the screenplay of “Silkwood,” which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. “Julia & Julie” was a success at the box office for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Releasing.
