“Journey to the Center of the Earth” is a science fiction movie about a professor and his nephew on holiday in Iceland when they get trapped in a large cavern with their tour guide. As the trio follow their only escape route which runs deep below the Earth’s surface, they encounter strange places and unusual creatures, such as dinosaurs. This fun and engrossing action film was well directed by Eric Brevig (“Yogi Bear” 2010). The screenplay was written by Michael D. Weiss, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett, adapted from the 1864 novel of the same name by Jules Verne, and the 1959 film from 20th Century Fox starring Pat Boone, James Mason, Arlene Dahl, and Diane Baker.
The cast includes Brendan Fraser as Professor Anderson, Josh Hutcherson as his nephew, Anita Briem as the tour guide, Seth Meyers as one of Fraser’s colleagues, Jean-Michael Pare, Jane Wheeler, Frank Fontaine, Giancarlo Caltabiano, Garth Giker, and Kaniehtiio Horn as a gum-chewing girl. The watchable “Journey to the Center of the Earth” was successful at the box office for New Line Cinema, Walden Media, and Warner Bros. Pictures. A sequel called “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” was released in 2012 with only Hutcherson remaining from the original cast.
