My Review

“Journey to the Center of the Earth” is a science fiction adventure movie telling the story of two scientists set off on an expedition to the center of the earth. They travel to Iceland to start their journey in a volcano, and are joined by another scientist and an Iceland native. Director Henry Levin (“And Baby Makes Three” 1949) kept all aspects of this project together: Marvelous special effects, the actors, good production values, and a storyline that makes for a fast-moving 132 minute running time.

The stars of the show are James Mason as the leader of the expedition, Pat Boone as his assistant, Arlene Dahl as a famous scientist, as well as Peter Ronson, Diane Baker, Alan Napier, Ivan Triesault, Alex Finlayson, Robert Adler, and Thayer David as Count Saknussemm. It was nominated for three Oscars, including art direction, sound, and special effects. “Journey to the Center of the Earth” was a success at the box office for producer-screenwriter Charles Brackett and 20th Century Fox. It was based on the 1864 novel of the same name by Jules Verne.
