My Review

Director-screenwriter Todd Phillips (“Starsky and Hutch” 2004) has given us a fascinating look at the back story of one of Batman’s most famous nemeses, “Joker.” Phillips and co-screenwriter Scott Silver (“The Mod Squad” 1999) went into the history and psychological backround of Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian who turns to a life of crime. The story is set in Gotham City and also deals with the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents.

Joaquin Pheonix delivers the goods as the Joker, dominating most scenes in the picture that won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. This was one of two Oscar wins for “Joker,” the other being Best Original Score, out of eleven nominations. The supporting cast includes Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Douglas Hodge, Glenn Flechler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Dante Pereira-Olson as a young Bruce Wayne, who will eventually grow up to be Batman.

“Joker” is based on the DC Comics characters that we all know and love, and is a watchable (albeit R rated) picture that debuted at number one at the box office during the weekend of Oct. 11-13, 2019, translating into big bucks for Warner Bros. Pictures. No joke!
