My Review

Tom Cruise stars as “Jerry Maguire,” a flamboyant sports agent fired by his management agency who then attempts to persuade his clients to stick with him. The results are great entertainment due to expert direction and writing by Cameron Crowe (“Fast Times at Ridgemont High” 1982), who also co-produced with James L. Brooks.

Cuba Gooding Jr. was also a major factor in this production, playing a football player whose constant refrain was “Show me the money,” a catchphrase that has entered common use in the English language. Gooding shot to stardom in this role and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. There were four other Oscar nominations for “Jerry Maguire” including Best Picture, Best Actor (Cruise), Editing, & Screenplay.

The supporting cast also included Rene Zellweger, who also, like Gooding, gained wider recognition through this picture. Other co-stars include Kelly Preston, Jerry O’Connell, Bonnie Hunt, Regina King, Jay Mohr, Eric Stoltz, Beau Bridges (uncredited role), and Jonathan Lipnicki in his big screen debut. Many sports personalities made appearances including Frank Gifford.

The watchable “Jerry Maguire” was a massive hit in theatrical release for TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures.
