My Review

“Jane Eyre” is a drama film about an orphan girl raised in an unloving home headed by her cruel aunt. In adulthood, she takes on a governess job in a wealthy home, and falls in love with the lord of the manor. However, some unexpected obstacles block the couple’s pathway to marriage. This engrossing melodrama was tightly directed by Robert Stevenson (“Mary Poppins” 1964), who also co-wrote the screenplay with John Houseman and Aldous Huxley. It was adapted from the 1846 novel of the same name by Charlotte Bronte.

The stars deliver exceptional performances, including Joan Fontaine in the title role, Orson Welles as Mr. Rochester, Peggy Ann Garner as young Jane Eyre, Agnes Moorhead as Mrs. Reed, Elizabeth Taylor as Helen, Margaret O’Brien as Adele, as well as Mae Marsh, Henry Daniell, Sara Allgood, Hillary Brooke, John Sutton, Erskine Sanford, and Mary Forbes. The watchable “Jane Eyre” was modestly successful at the box office for producer Orson Welles and 20th Century Fox.
