My Review

Alfred Hitchcock’s worst film is undoubtedly “Jamaica Inn,” a story of a gang of criminals who caused shipwrecks off of the treacherous Cornwall coast of England by putting out warning beacons, capturing and raiding the ships, killing the crew, and stealing the cargo.

The entire 108 boring minutes of this movie was filled with a muddled plot, poorly written dialogue, and bad acting by over-rated actors like Charles Laughton and Maureen O’Hara. Screenwriters Alma Reville (Mrs. Hitchcock), Sidney Gilliat, Joan Harrison, and J. B. Priestly did a terrible job of adaptation from the 1936 novel by Daphne du Maurier. Hitch later used more of Alma’s scripts with greater success, such as “Rebecca” (1940) and “The Birds” (1963).

Nevertheless, “Jamaica Inn” was profitable at the box office for producer Charles Laughton, Mayflower Productions, and Associated British Picture Corporation. “Jamaica Inn” was Alfred Hitchcock’s last motion picture project in the United Kingdom before moving to Hollywood, California, U. S. of A.
