My Review

“Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is a poor attempt to reboot an aging film character series, despite the big names involved. Chris Pine is the fourth Jack Ryan on the big screen (it would be his only appearance), and, despite help from director Kenneth Branagh (“Much Ado About Nothing” 1993), did not pull it off well. (John Krasinski would eventually be successful with a Jack Ryan television series starting in 2018.)

Screenwriters Adam Cozad and Mark Vahradian came up with a mediocre story that has Ryan serving as a Marine in Afghanistan, and eventually recruited by the CIA. The supporting cast includes Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Colm Feore, Kenneth Branagh, Matt Linnell, and David Paymer. Paramount Pictures’ “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” was a bomb at the box office and did not get out of basic training.
