My Review

“J. Edgar” is a biopic motion picture about the life and career of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. Producer-director Clint Eastwood and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black failed in their attempt to make a great movie due to poor production values like bad lighting, terrible makeup, a confusing and nonlinear storyline that kept going back and forth in time, and taking liberties with historical facts.

The one outstanding characteristic of the film was the good performance by Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role, which was minimalized by his cheesy makeup, second-rate surroundings, and terrible dialogue from an abysmal script. The supporting cast includes Armie Hammer as Clyde Tolson, Naomi Watts as Hoover’s secretary, Judy Dench as his mother, Jeffrey Donovan as Robert Kennedy, Christopher Shyer as Richard Nixon, Josh Lucas as Charles Lindbergh, Jessica Hecht as Emma Goldman, as well as Dermot Mulroney, Stephen Root, Lea Thompson, Ken Howard, Zach Grenier, Denis O’Hare, Damon Harriman, Josh Hamilton, Geoff Pearson, Michael O’Neill, Josh Stramberg, Kyle Eastwood (son of the producer), and Adam Driver in his motion picture debut as a gas station manager.

The so-so movie “J. Edgar,” whose musical score was composed by Mr. Eastwood himself, had some modest success in theatrical release for producer Clint Eastwood, Malpaso Productions, Imagine Entertainment, Wintergreen Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
