“It’s a Wonderful Life” is a Christmas film telling the story of George Bailey, a despondent man who is contemplating ending it all when he receives a visit from his guardian angel. He shows George what life would have been like for the people around him if he hadn’t been born. Director Frank Capra (“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” 1939) put together a movie with outstanding production values and a marvelous story. He co-wrote the screenplay with Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.
James Stewart heads the cast as George Bailey, probably the biggest role of his career. Co-stars include Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, Henry Travers, Ward Bond, Gloria Grahame, Beulah Bondi, Frank Faylen, H. B. Warner, Sheldon Leonard, and Frank Albertson. Uncredited cast includes Ellen Corby, Carl Switzer, Dick Elliot, and Moroni Olsen as the voice of the senior angel.
Believe it or not, this watchable classic film barely made money at the box office for producer Frank Capra, Liberty Films, and RKO Radio Pictures. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning one for Technical Achievement Award, for the development of a new method of simulating falling snow on movie sets. Other Oscar nods were for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Stewart), Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Recording.
