My Review

The Best Picture of 1934 is…..”It Happened One Night.” This romantic comedy tells the story of a pampered socialite trying to run away from her father, and eventually falling in with a cynical reporter. The madcap comedy proceeds from there, well-directed by Frank Capra in one of his first feature-length films.

This is an early example of a screwball comedy, with its fast-paced dialogue and farcical situations. It was also released in February, 1934, only a few months before the enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code in July, 1934, by the Motion Picture Association. Capra would have faced more restrictions on the racy dialogue and scenes he had allowed.

The stars of the show, Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, were perfect in these roles, and their careers were revitalized after the film’s release. Co-stars include Alan Hale, Walter Connolly, Roscoe Karns, Jameson Thomas, Arthur Hoyt, Blanche Friderici, Charles C. Wilson, and Ward Bond in an uncredited role as a bus driver.

“It Happened One Night” was very popular in theatrical release for producers Frank Capra and Harry Cohn and Columbia Pictures. It won the five major Academy Awards: Best Picture (Capra & Cohn), Best Director (Capra), Best Actor (Clark Gable), Best Actress (Claudette Colbert), and Best Screenplay Adaptation (Robert Riskin). Only two other films have won the big five: “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991).
